What is a trademark? A trademark is a government-granted monopoly over the use of a phrase or term or a logo within a certain area of sales or services. Why do we have trademarks? It’s to prevent consumers from becoming confused about the origin of goods and services. So they’re actually not to protect companies — they’re intended to protect consumers. That said, it’s pretty much companies that enforce them and companies that get them.
